Center of Concern is a progressive faith-based research, advocacy and education institution located in Washington, DC. Rooted in Catholic social tradition, the Center of Concern works collaboratively to create a world where economic and social systems guarantee basic rights, uphold human dignity, promote sustainable livelihoods and renew Earth.
The Center of Concern is seeking a dynamic professional as Program Director for the Global Women’s Project. The crises of our time demand a new approach to development which has human well-being and ecological sustainability at its core. The Project is beginning to develop and advance an integrated analysis of the intersections among global economic systems and the care and ecological crises. Through research, analysis and educational outreach the Project advocates women’s full human rights with a particular emphasis on social and economic rights. In this time of serious threat of climate change and its potential impact on human well-being, the Project is also advocating a fundamental transformation of economic and social policies toward ecologically sustainable development. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to activist research directed toward alternative eco-feminist policies domestically and globally that will ensure the well-being of women, families and communities and Earth’s sustainability.
Principal Responsibilities
-
Research and analysis of current economic and social trends and issues relative to human well-being and sustainable development, domestically and globally.
-
Working within a faith-based eco-feminist and Catholic Social Thought perspective to advance human well-being and Earth’s sustainability.
-
Engaging in dialogues with strategic groups, such as academics, women, development and environmental NGOs and policy advocates to advance development alternatives for both the South and the North
-
Advocacy with relevant congressional and administrative policy makers
-
Working with established national and international networks and coalitions for alternative policies.
-
Participating in the Center of Concern’s planning, programming, and communication strategies to better integrate its work and improve its effectiveness.

Planning programs and developing grant proposals.
Required Skills and Qualifications

Graduate degree in a related discipline, preferably with a background in feminist and/or eco-economics
-
Commitment to gender, race and economic justice from a pro-poor, pro-sustainable development perspective domestically and globally
-
Demonstrated leadership ability
-
Excellent communication skills both written and oral. English required, Spanish or French desirable

Ability to work creatively and independently within a collaborative, interdisciplinary team context

Strong networking skills

Management skills
-
Minimum 3-year relevant work experience
Salary Range: $45,000-$55,000 depending on experience.

Two Assistant or Associate Professors
Arizona State University’s Complex Adaptive Systems Initiative (CASI) invites applications for two tenure-track or tenured positions at the rank of assistant or associate professor. The successful candidate will have a tenure-track or tenured appointment in the academic unit most suitable in view of his/her background, skills and interests, and may fulfill all or part of his/her teaching duties as part of the Applied Mathematics in the Life and Social Sciences (AMLSS) degree programs depending on experience and expertise.
CASI is a new, university-wide initiative at ASU to further research and teaching in this new and exciting domain. The successful candidates would also participate in the Mathematical, Computational and Modeling Sciences Center, which includes faculty members from disciplinary and interdisciplinary programs connected to applied mathematics. Faculty members involved in these new initiatives have a strong commitment to education through research and an equally strong commitment to student diversity. Current research strengths include anthropology, bio-economics and environmental economics, ecology, epidemiology, ecology of infectious diseases, immunology, neurobiology, public health, and sustainability. They collaborate extensively inside and outside the university in the social sciences, mathematics and science
education, biological sciences, medicine, and environmental sciences.
We are particularly interested in candidates who are able to engage in research that crosses traditional academic boundaries while addressing scientific challenges whose answers are tied in to the study of complex processes over multiple levels of organization and several temporal and spatial scales. The areas of application include, but are not limited to, computational epidemiology, computational ecology or computational social sciences.
Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in the computational, mathematical or statistical sciences with a research emphasis in the application of the mathematical sciences in the life and/or social sciences by August 2010, and familiarity with the tools of the complex adaptive systems and/or network approaches.
Successful candidates will be expected to conduct research and publish in an area appropriate to their expertise, including complex adaptive systems, computational and theoretical ecology and epidemiology, social networks and social dynamics. Successful candidates will provide quality teaching of undergraduate and graduate courses in the new applied mathematics in the life and social sciences degrees. They will also mentor undergraduate and graduate students involved in trans-disciplinary research, participate in on campus interdisciplinary activities and carry out appropriate professional service.
Candidates should have demonstrated computational and modeling skills in the context of interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary research. Candidates at the assistant professor level must also have demonstrated potential for excellence in research and teaching at all levels. Candidates at the tenured associate professor level must have demonstrated excellence in research and teaching at all levels, and should have experience advising graduate students with diverse backgrounds and interests. All candidates must have experience in mentoring undergraduate students.

SENIOR ENVIRONMENTAL ECONOMIST
About the job:
The Environmental and Resource Economics Group is involved in the development and application of valuation tools to quantify the impact of development on the environment in the monetary terms; decisionsupport tools that support the valuation of natural, social and economic tradeoffs and inform decision making; and incentivebased tools (including payments for ecosystem services),to incentive behavioural change with respect to natural resource (particularly water,energy,biodiversity and waste management).
The Group now has a position available for a highly motivated Senior Environmental Economist who is interested and capable of conducting applied economics R&D within multidisciplinary teams.
Minimum job responsibilities:
- The spatial and temporal evaluation of socioeconomic impacts of different environmental and resource management scenarios and options is one of the core functions of the research group
- Drafting technical proposals and the undertaking of project management and implementation
- Establishing relationships with clients
- Securing and managing large scale projects
- Leadership/mentorship to junior colleagues within the Environmental and Resource Economics Group
- Contributing to the delivery of specialist analysis in support of fundamental and applied research and policy evaluation.
- This will require developing, managing and applying a variety of economic tools and databases, writing scientific and policy reports, and journal articles. It is essential that the incumbent has e well developed problem solving skills and interests in applying these to the general fields of water, energy, biodiversity and waste management.
Qualifications and Experience:
- A PhD (although a Masters will be acceptable provided incumbent has a minimum of 5 years’ experience) in agricultural, natural resource or environmental economics, or equivalent
- At least 5 years’ experience in managing research projects
- Proficiency in the use of MS Excel and MS Word
- Demonstrated report writing skills
- Experience in collecting, collating and analysing primary and secondary data
- Demonstrated capacity to develop solutions to environmental economic problems through the effective application of economic analysis techniques (such as market and nonmarket based valuation, ecological economic modeling, cost benefit analysis and multi-criteria analysis)
- Ability to work both independently and as an effective team member, demonstrating personal organisational skills
- Well developed oral communication skills with ability and experience in liaising with clients
- Ability to network broadly with stakeholders
- Code 08/EB driver’s license
- Demonstrated interest and experience in interdisciplinary research.

Graduate Program in Urban and Regional Planning Public Policy Center

University of Iowa: Assistant or Associate Professor Environmental or Resource Economics
The Graduate Program in Urban and Regional Planning and the Public Policy Center are seeking candidates for an opening for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant or associate professor level beginning in August, 2010. The successful candidate must, at a minimum, have a Ph.D. in economics or a related discipline, demonstrate substantial potential for scholarly research and publication, and be able to teach courses and publish quality research in resource or environmental economics and related areas. The successful candidate will have his or her teaching based in the Graduate Program in Urban and Regional Planning. Of critical interest are scholars whose research and teaching focus on water and sustainability.
The position will consist of a joint appointment with the Graduate Program in Urban and Regional Planning and the Public Policy Center. The Public Policy Center, with which Planning has several joint appointments, is the University’s primary center for public policy research. Moreover, the University has identified water sustainability as an area of strategic emphasis and Planning and the Public Policy Center, along with the College of Engineering, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and College of Public Health, have been recently selected to participate in this initiative. This hire will be one of 10 hires under the University’s water sustainability initiative. Successful applicants will be expected to participate in the University’s intellectual community on water sustainability that will be enhanced by these hires.
